It’s definitely March, when temperatures oscillate between below-freezing lows and early-summer type highs. We had a couple of nights below freezing this past week AND two days with a high of 81. How’s that for crazy? After a unseasonably cold February (coldest in the past three years since I’ve been keeping records), spring is around the corner. I actually got outside and did some flower planting, some harvesting, and made my big spring garden center trip. This week’s garden photos!
This past weekend, we got a taste of spring. Saturday was 63 degrees, and I woke up Sunday morning to the sound of birds chirping outside my open window. Although it was cloudy, I was able to spend some time in the garden on Sunday in the 74 degree weather. Unfortunately, the cold will be returning this coming week, but the promise of spring is in the air. This week’s garden photos!
Yesterday, we had a beautifully warm, sunny day here. It reached 67 degrees! A perfect day to plant some Tom Thumb peas along my front walkway (in the spaces where I’ve harvested lettuce). I also harvested some salad goodies and planted 288 seeds in flats for my grow room. Unfortunately, the warm weather will be very short-lived. A cold front is passing through today, and tonight’s low is supposed to be 28 (yeah, rain! Boo, frost!). But alas, such is winter in the Lowcountry. At least I can still garden! Good morning, everyone. To all my New England family and friends, stay warm and cozy tonight and tomorrow – and be safe in that Nor’easter blizzard heading your way. I miss winter snows, but I don’t miss blizzards! Weather reports like that make me a little less homesick and a little more grateful that I am able to grow and harvest some things in January. Wow…it’s December 1st already. Can you believe it? My Thanksgiving was wonderful, and I hope yours was, too. The week was busy – preparing for the big meal, of course. In the garden, we received just shy of 6 inches of much-needed rain in four days! The temperatures were mild, so I had the covers off my hoop tunnels, and all my newly-sown seed received a good soaking. After the rain, the night time chill returned, but all my plants are doing well. This week’s garden photos!
Despite the continuing intense heat, I’m still harvesting quite a bit. Compared to last year, my pepper harvests are not as big; but I know I’ll be swimming in peppers soon enough (when the heat subsides). This week, I harvested 13 cucumbers, 1 (almost 11 pound) watermelon, 8 pounds of melons (honeydew, cantaloupe, tigger, and rich sweetness), almost 1 pound of lima beans (shelled), 7 pounds of eggplant, almost 2.5 pounds of carrots, a little over 2.5 pounds of peppers, and 9.5 pounds of tomatoes. Garden Bounty photos!
This past weekend, I harvested the bulk of my winter crops. Considering we had several frosts and two ice storms AFTER I planted, I’m surprised I harvested anything. I harvested the rest of my radishes and lettuce a couple weeks or so ago. Here’s what I harvested this past weekend.
It’s been a busy week in the garden. The temperature was in the mid-80’s, and there was much to do. I was hoping to get some of my seed in the ground this past weekend, but that didn’t happen. I spent twelve hours in the garden, and it was all spent preparing some of my raised beds. (I still have four more to do!) Why did it take me so long? See my post later this week, “The Good Idea that Wasn’t.” For now, let me share the good things from my garden.
It’s hard to believe it’s already December, the last month of the year! My 2013 garden log is almost complete, the seed catalogs are soon to arrive, and it’s time to start planning my seed germinating and my winter and spring gardens. There’s not much rest for southern gardeners as we can grow something almost year round. December and January are the slow months, then things kick back up again! Although this is my slowest season in the garden, I do have some pictures to share with you. This week in the garden!
