It’s definitely cooled off in my garden this week. We had one night that the temperature got down to 36 degrees. Thankfully, my garden did well. However, this week the forecast calls for two nights below freezing. It’s time to pull out the drop cloths to see if I can keep my peppers ripening for a little while longer. This weekend I harvested so much that I’m going to share my harvest pictures with you in my next post. Today, here are pictures from my garden!
According to the calender, it’s September. But you wouldn’t know it by walking outside where I live! We are still experiencing sweltering heat and humidity with temperatures in the mid-90s and humidity levels to match. There is something incongruous with planting fall crops in this kind of weather, for sure. But I press on! This past weekend, I replanted my three varieties of leaf lettuce, kale, and brussel sprouts because they didn’t germinate. (Too hot??) I also planted head lettuce (Tom Thumb and Buttercrunch), beets (Detroit Red and Early Wonder), and carrots (Imperator and Scarlet Nantes). Turnips and radishes are next – if I can just survive the heat! At least my plants are hanging in there! This week’s garden pictures!
Although my squash plants died, I was fortunate enough to get a couple of zucchini out of them first. Unfortunately, no yellow squash. But the good news is a coworker had an overabundance, so I nabbed a few! Add my onions, tomatoes, and herbs, and voila! — Italian Squash. I’m sure you’re seeing a theme here with “Italian” being in the name of so many of my recipes. Well, they’re family recipes, so what else am I going to call them? 🙂 Italian Squash!
It’s been a wonderful week here at my Sanctuary Garden. The weather hasn’t been too hot – in the upper 70s to lower 80s most of the week. The sky has threatened rain several times, but never kept its forecasted promise. So, I’ve had to break out the hose and water. At least the clouds have kept it cooler. The garden is filling in and looking lush! Things are growing, fruit is popping, and flowers are blossoming (like my hydrangeas pictured above). Come take a look!
