How My Garden Grows in May ~ Part 1

I can’t believe it’s been four or five weeks since I started transplanting and sowing seed in my garden. During that time, the weather changed from cold to springlike comfort to scorching summer heat back to springlike comfort. And it’s rained only twice in that time period, too. However, my garden is growing, and I want to share pictures of all my raised beds. I’ll also include links to compare the beds to how they looked a month ago. Because my garden is so large, I’ll share my pictures in two parts – so come back tomorrow for the second half!

Sanctuary Gardener Update ~ 11/4/13

Great news in the garden this past week: it rained! Friday night we got 1.2 inches of rain, and my plants are so happy. In fact, it was just what my newly planted seeds needed to poke through the earth. I’ve got different lettuces, spinach, carrots, beets, watercress, onions, and garlic sprouting now. I just planted the garlic, onions, and spinach 10 days ago, too. I love seeing new things growing in my garden, especially this time of year.

Sanctuary Gardener Update ~ 10/14/13

I am loving this cooler, autumn weather! The temperatures are in the upper 70s, lower 80s with much lower humidity. It’s actually nice to be in the garden. I finally planted my cover crop (red clover), five types of radishes, watercress (in a pot), and some more golden globe turnips. I planted a few more kale seeds, too. I also trimmed my cucumber vines in an attempt to help them survive against the onslaught of pickle worms. I’m not sure if we’re past the worst of it, but I’m hoping. My mums are in bloom (see picture above) and there are good things happening in my garden.

Sanctuary Gardener Update ~ 9/23/13

Another week without rain here in my Sanctuary Garden. I’m not looking forward to my water bill this month, that’s for sure! But, it has cooled off finally. The high temperatures this week were in the low 80’s. I think I can finally replant some of my fall crops that didn’t germinate at all or didn’t germinate well. In the meantime, the cucumbers, squash, and beans are growing; and my peppers are starting to pick up on production again.

Sanctuary Gardener Update ~ 7/1/13

Well, June is over – and I completed the 2013 Blogathon, posting every day for 30 days! I didn’t think I was going to make it – with work and garden and putting up harvests – but I did it. Again, thanks to all of you for coming with me on the journey. A lot happened at the homestead this week. Storms were a major part of this week – and more are coming over the next couple of days. I’ve been trying to re-apply fungicide to my tomatoes, but the rain is preventing me – all the while, increasing the spread of the spores. sigh On the bright side, we realized this week that the baby bluebirds in my birdhouse have hatched. My “Garden Wilson” told me he saw one of the babies stick his head out of the house to receive a worm from Mama this morning. As soon as one of us can get a picture, I’ll post it! And more good news: we have another family in the yard.
