I took this week off to work in the garden, but I didn’t realize how much time it was going to take. Other than taking time off for the Sabbath and Passover, I have worked 8 to 10 hour days in the garden; and I still have yet to start spring planting! (That begins today, though.) However, my garden beds look beautiful and ready to plant now that I’ve harvested the last of my winter crops, weeded in and around the beds (filling TEN four-feet-tall lawn & leaf bags!), supplemented my soil with Azomite (rock dust) and compost, and top dressed the cypress mulch around my beds. (I’ll share pictures in my next Sanctuary Gardener Update post.) It’s been a lot of work, but I have everything ready for seed and seedlings, and a refrigerator full of root veggies and greens. It’s been a quiet week in the garden, although the weather has bounced around. In typical Charleston fashion, the week’s weather included a low of 33, a high of 67, over 2 inches of rain, clouds, sun, and quite a bit of wind one day. Is it winter? Is it spring? My garden surely can’t tell! Without any frosts this week – and a couple of days in the 60s – there is some new growth in the garden. This week’s garden photos!
This past week, Charleston got a little taste of the winter the rest of the country usually gets. Of course, our temperatures weren’t near as low as many of you had to deal with. But the night of January 7, we got down to 18 degrees. In fact, we spent close to 48 hours below freezing! Needless to say, my hoop tunnels and key lime trees stayed covered for 4 days. The day time highs weren’t sufficient to uncover them and then have to recover them for the freezing temperatures at night. A couple days ago, the post-freeze garden inspection began. Happy new year, everyone! Welcome to my first update of 2015. It’s a new year, a new opportunity to expand our horizons, and a new chance to grow more and harvest more. This past week, I looked at seed catalogs, weeded, harvested, and planted peas and spinach and lettuce. The weather has been rather warm, but a cold winter blast is on its way. Next Wednesday night will go down to 20 degrees. Big difference from yesterday’s high of 74. Ah, the joys of living on the coast of South Carolina. Regardless, it IS nice to still be gardening in the winter. This week’s garden photos!
Welcome to my last garden update of 2014. I can hardly believe the year is just about over, and a new one is about to begin. The new seed catalogs are arriving, and I’m working on garden planning – determining crop rotation/planting placements, deciding on seeds to order, making a garden shopping list for spring. Even when there’s not much going on in the garden, there’s still a lot going on with the gardener. 🙂 This week’s garden photos!
Wow…it’s December 1st already. Can you believe it? My Thanksgiving was wonderful, and I hope yours was, too. The week was busy – preparing for the big meal, of course. In the garden, we received just shy of 6 inches of much-needed rain in four days! The temperatures were mild, so I had the covers off my hoop tunnels, and all my newly-sown seed received a good soaking. After the rain, the night time chill returned, but all my plants are doing well. This week’s garden photos!
Considering we’ve already had our first frost, I harvested quite a bit of produce this past week – including a wonderful surprise of raspberries (after I thought the canes were done for the year). My harvests included produce from summer and fall crops, something I just love seeing. I harvested my first key lime, over 5 ounces of raspberries, about a pound of eggplant, a pound of peanuts, a half pound of greens, over 1.5 pounds of beans, 3.5 pounds of peppers, 3/4 pound of radishes, and 10 pounds of pumpkins. Gosh, I love gardening! This past week’s garden bounty!
I had a banner week harvesting in the garden! Most of the past week was in the 80s, and my plants were displaying their best fruit just in time for the county fair. Unfortunately, the cold is coming a couple weeks earlier than normal, so this may be my last big harvest week of the year (at least, until the fall crops mature). I harvested 4 tomatoes, a handful of greens, over 3.5 pounds of snap beans (my last of the year), almost 3 pounds of eggplant, almost 6 pounds of winter squash, and over 12 pounds of peppers! I didn’t harvest much from the garden this past week. Not that there was little to harvest, but because I’m saving the harvest until Wednesday. Why? That’s the day to submit home-grown produce and herbs to the competition at the county fair! By waiting until that day, I’ll have the best harvest available to pick from – and it’ll be absolutely fresh. Yet, in spite of the wait, I still harvested a 2.5 pound pumpkin (well, it fell off the vine unripe), 2 1/4 pounds of butter peas (shelled), my first greens (5 ounces), and 2 tomatoes. This past week’s garden bounty!
The weather this week has been beautiful! Temperatures in the upper 70s/low 80s during the day and in the upper 50s/low 60s at night. After two weeks of dry weather, we got an inch of much-needed rain. Next rain storm? Not for at least 10 more days. Great weather for harvesting, not so good for new seedlings. At least I can water my little babies, which I do daily; and they’re growing quite well. This week’s garden photos!
