It’s Farmer Friday!

My garden is not as it should be. I’m on the back end of one of the busiest times at my job with numerous deadlines that have left me exhausted. Oh, I’ve been harvesting and putting up some of the bounty, but the “farming” chores have suffered. I’ve been so tired, I’ve had little desire to get out in my garden at all. Now THAT’S tired!!! So, I decided to go to bed early last night and sleep in this morning (thus the delay in my posting time today), and I feel better. So much better, I’ve made this my farmer Friday.

After I have my coffee and eats, I’m heading out to the garden to do some major planting today. I want to plant more beets, lettuce, and carrots because what germinated just isn’t enough. Our first hard frost last year wasn’t until the end of December, so there should be time to get a good harvest out of what I replant.

It’s also time to plant the spinach, onions, and garlic. More than half of the garlic I’m planting is from my harvest this past May. How great is that?

We have a 50% chance for rain tomorrow (yippee!), so today is especially a good time to get the seed in the ground.

It’s also time to fertilize and apply an epsom salt foliar spray. Hopefully, I won’t run out of daylight – which is happening more quickly these days! – before I finish.

Celeste fig harvest ~ October 11

Celeste fig harvest ~ October 11

Remember all the figs I’ve been harvesting? Well, I have enough to make at least one batch of fig preserves. And with the deadline to enter canned goods into our tri-county fair being next weekend, I’d better get a batch made this weekend so I can enter my fig preserves along with my other entries.

Oh, and there’s more peppers! So, I think a couple more batches of hot pepper jam are in order, as well.

So, as you can see, I’ll be a full-fledged farmer today – planting, fertilizing, harvesting, canning. Whew! Where’s that coffee? I have a lot of work to do!

What are you doing on your homestead this weekend?
